Convert your PDF files into clean Markdown (.md) format with this free online PDF to Markdown converter. The tool preserves your document's structure, including headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and links, making it easy to edit and reuse your content. There is no signup, no watermark and your files are processed securely.

Convert PDFs While Preserving Formatting

Copying text from a PDF often removes the original formatting and leaves you with a messy document. This converter keeps the structure of your PDF by converting headings into Markdown heading levels, preserving bullet and numbered lists, rebuilding tables where possible and maintaining links, bold text, italic text, blockquotes and inline code. The result is a well organized Markdown file that is ready to edit without spending time fixing the formatting. If you need a fully editable document with the original page layout, converting your PDF to Word may be a better option.

Ready for GitHub, Obsidian, Notion and More

The generated Markdown file follows the standard Markdown format, making it compatible with GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, Visual Studio Code and many other Markdown editors. Simply open the file or paste the content into your preferred platform, and it will display correctly without extra formatting. If you are moving a large set of documents, convert them one at a time, then use Merge PDF or Compress PDF on the original files for easy sharing and printing.

Free, Secure and Easy to Use

This online PDF to Markdown converter is completely free and does not require you to create an account. Your files are uploaded through a secure connection and are automatically deleted from the server after processing to protect your privacy. The tool works in any web browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. If your PDF is a scanned document or an image-based file, it must first contain selectable text. You can use an OCR tool to recognize the text before converting it into Markdown. PDFs created from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or other digital applications usually convert directly without any additional steps.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?
Upload your PDF, and the tool reads its text layer and rebuilds the document as a Markdown (.md) file, then gives you the result to download. There is no signup and nothing to install. It works in any browser, and the output is ready to paste into GitHub, a documentation site, or a note-taking app.
What formatting does it keep?
It preserves the parts of a document that carry meaning: headings become Markdown heading levels, bullet and numbered lists stay as lists, and links, bold, italic, blockquotes and inline code are kept. Tables are rebuilt as Markdown tables when the layout is clear enough to detect. Very complex or heavily designed layouts may simplify, since Markdown itself is a plain, structural format.
Are images included in the Markdown?
No. Images are ignored completely, and no image placeholders are added, so you get a clean text-only Markdown file with nothing to clean up. If you need the pictures from a PDF, use a tool built for that instead, such as [PDF to JPG](/pdf-to-jpg).
My PDF is a scan and it will not convert. Why?
A scanned PDF is really just images of pages, so it has no selectable text for the converter to read. When the tool detects this, it asks you to run [OCR PDF](/ocr-pdf) first, which adds a real text layer to the scan. After OCR, bring the file back here and it will convert to Markdown normally.
Is it free, and is my document private?
Yes, it is free with no signup. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically from the server a short time after it is processed. The conversion runs on our own server using a local library, so your document is not sent to any outside or third-party AI service.
Where can I use the Markdown file afterwards?
Anywhere that reads Markdown: GitHub and GitLab READMEs and issues, Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, static site generators, and most wikis and documentation tools. Because .md is plain text, it stays readable and portable, and it will not lock you into any single app.
